    • Hendry's Beach 2981 Cliff Dr (next to the entrance of The Boathouse restaurant) Santa Barbara, CA, 93109

Join fellow walkers at Hendry's Beach (aka Arroyo Burro Beach County Park) every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:40 to walk the beach, visit, make new friends and catch up with old friends, spot whales and dolphins, and get fresh air and exercise. We'll meet at the top of the stairs down to the beach, between The Boathouse restaurant and the lifeguard stand. Some of us walk fast, and some of us stroll. We suggest wearing appropriate shoes to walk on the beach or up to the nearby Douglas Preserve, when the tide is high. After the walk, we will often gather at the picnic tables near our starting point, and share a snack and conversation. Hope to see you there!

    • Arroyo Burro Beach - Douglas Family Preserve 2981 Cliff Drive Santa Barbara, CA, 93109
    Register

Bring your best furry friend(s) for a morning walk above the beach on the dog-friendly Douglas Family Preserve. This open space used to be a nursery and was saved from development by Santa Barbara residents wishing to preserve for the community. The Kirk Douglas family was instrumental in helping to raise funds to keep it a public park, and so it was named for the Douglas family. This was spearheaded by Michael Douglas, a UCSB graduate. (Go Gauchos!). If you don't have a pup, there will be plenty to go around! We will start in the far east end of the Arroyo Burro (Hendry's) beach parking lot. (2981 Cliff Drive) Look for the red NEWCOMERS sign. We will walk up to the Douglas Preserve from Cliff Drive east, and enjoy a relaxing stroll around the perimeter and pictures, if we can get the pups to stand still together! This is about 1.5 miles total.  Afterwards, we will gather at Lighthouse Coffee on Cliff Drive for some human refreshments. (1819 Cliff Dr., Suite C )

    • Buena Vista Trailhead

    Buena Vista Loop Trail

    No Hike if Raining

This hike begins at the Buena Vista trailhead on Park Lane, goes to the end of the Buena Vista trail, then goes west/left at a split to a little uphill connector to meet the Romero Catway, it then goes west downhill on the Romero Catway, goes south along the lower part of the San Ysidro trail, then goes east on the Old Pueblo trail to end near the start point on Park Lane.

Total distance is ~3.2 miles, total elevation gain 850ft.  This is a moderate-rated hike.  There is one downhill section where poles are recommended for those who feel they need them.

This is a scenic loop hike with views of beautiful homes, ocean, canyons, valleys and creeks.  This is a shorter hike than normal so we can stop again for coffee and croissants at Pierre LaFond in Montecito afterwards if you'd like.

This hike is quite exposed - bring lots of water!

From November to February, they fly about the eucalyptus forest.  However, the monarch population has decreased in recent years, as described in the Santa Barbara Independent, which describes how you can do your part in counting the monarch population for researchers: Https://www.independent.com/2025/09/15/santa-barbara-asked-to-count-monarch-butterflies/.  We hope this will be a hike where we can see some and have some great opportunities for beautiful lepidopteran photos!  As far as the trails we will be traversing, Ellwood Bluffs are a wide expanse of land criss-crossed with dirt trails. The trails are mild in elevation gain and sandy.

The parking lot for Ellwood Bluffs Walk is called Goleta Butterfly Grove Parking and is located at 7559 Palos Verdes Dr, Goleta CA 93117. The distance is about 4.5 miles and will take approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours.
